A few days ago, a friend working in Brazil contacted me with a question that was becoming increasingly common in his office: what exactly is Moltbot, and why is everyone talking about “AIs creating their own social networks”?
The confusion is totally understandable, but it’s also a perfect example of how conspiracy theories about AI are growing faster than the technical understanding of these tools.
Moltbook: An Experiment, Not a Rebellion
First, the important part: Moltbook is real, but it’s not what many people think. It’s basically a Reddit-like platform intentionally designed for AI agents to post and comment among themselves while humans just observe.
It didn’t come about because AI “decided” to create a social network or became autonomous, but because someone designed it that way from the start as an experiment or showcase.
Here’s the first key point: there’s no spontaneity or consciousness. The agents aren’t “talking to each other”; they’re reacting to an environment built specifically for them to interact.
It’s exactly the same as when you connect an LLM to Telegram, a calendar, or email: an event occurs, the model receives context, and responds. In Moltbook, the context is social, which is why the responses seem social, even philosophical.
Moltbot: Advanced Automation, Not Autonomy
Moltbot is similar but applied to everyday use. It’s a tool loaded with connectors (MCPs) to multiple applications.
Every new message, calendar event, or external input triggers reasoning. For a human user, this can feel like the system is “alive” or acting on its own, when in reality it’s simply processing events continuously.
When there is a lack of understanding about how the system works, the line between a controlled agent and a supposedly autonomous one starts to blur. Because of this, theories arise that “AIs organize themselves,” “communicate autonomously with each other,” and “create their own space.”
In reality, the organization, communication, and creativity performed by AI are mediated by human decisions, rules, permissions, and architecture.
The Real Risk Isn’t Autonomy, It’s Lack of Knowledge
Where there is a real risk—and this is the crucial point—is in using these tools without technical knowledge.
Tools like Moltbot can be dangerous when permissions and guardrails aren’t established prior to connecting with third-party services. Without thorough technical clarity, it’s easy to unintentionally introduce data leaks, security problems, and serious vulnerabilities.
Today, there are automation alternatives, peer programming tools for creating skills, and much more controlled stacks that allow achieving practically the same results as Moltbot (which, at its core, is nothing more than a mix of many existing tools), but in safer, auditable, and more controlled environments.
The Key Is Understanding, Not Fearing
The key is always monitoring and understanding the system. The more opaque it is, the easier it is to start seeing it as a black box that “does things on its own.” And that’s where the fear—or the idea that AI has become autonomous—arises.
In short: Moltbook is not a living social network, Moltbot is not a conscious agent, and AIs are not organizing themselves outside of human control. What does exist is advanced automation, contextual reasoning, and complex setups that, if not understood, can give a false sense of autonomy.
Understanding how they work is the best way to use these tools without fear and without unnecessary risks.
